Azalea Tales
Saturday, March 27, 2-5 pm
The Tyler Public Library offers up stories and music of the Great Depression and Dust Bowl years to Azalea Trails visitors on Saturday, March 27, 2-5 p.m. at Azalea Tales. The event is one of many this spring that coincide with The Big Read, which, in Tyler this year, encourages community members to read or re-read “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck. The novel, set in the midst of the Depression years tells the story of the Joad family on their trek from Oklahoma to California, seeking work and a new home. Azalea Tales is a free event, open to the public.
Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Jimmy LaFave will be on hand for the event, performing music that includes a tribute to Woody Guthrie. LaFave will be joined by Longview author Grace Lundmark, sharing the stories behind her new book, Chloe May: Daughter of the Dust Bowl. The afternoon event will also showcase John Tatum, Mission Tejas State Park Ranger, presenting “Toys, Tools and Tales of the Great Depression.” In addition, The Big Read Essay Contest winners will be announced at Azalea Tales. All the speakers and performers plan to be on hand throughout the afternoon to bring the Depression-era to life for AzaleaTrails visitors and community members.

The Hills at Home by Nancy Clark
While always well-stocked with clean sheets, Lily Hill is not expecting visitors. At least not in the numbers that descend upon her genteelly dilapidated New England ancestral home in the summer of ’89. Brother Harvey arrives first, thrice-widowed and eager for company; then perennially self-dramatizing niece Ginger and her teenaged daughter Betsy; then Alden, just laid-off from Wall Street, with his wife Becky, and their rowdy brood of four. As summer fades into fall, it becomes clear that no one intends to leave. But just as Lily’s industrious hospitality gives way to a somewhat strained domestic routine, the Hill clan must face new challenges together. Brimming with wit and a compendium of Yankee curiosities, The Hills at Home is an irresistible modern take on an old-fashioned comedy of manners.
Apr. 27
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson
In 1993 Greg Mortenson was the exhausted survivor of a failed attempt to ascend the dangerous K2 mountain, an American climbing bum wandering emaciated and lost through Pakistan’s Karakoram Himalaya. After he was taken in and nursed back to health by the people of an impoverished Pakistani village, Mortenson promised to return one day and build them a school. From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time—Greg Mortenson’s one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban.

Striking in the depths of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl blasted hopes and hard work of people in the Great Plains. For those who lived through it, the experience remains unmatched as an example of ecological calamity. Nowadays it is not easy for younger generations to comprehend what happened. But humanities resources can bridge the gap between generations and promote understanding of the pioneering will to prevail in the face of immutable laws of nature.
In the 1930s, photographers working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) captured unforgettable images of human fortitude and despair in the face of calamity; Nebraska photographer Bill Ganzel set out in the late 1970s to find and re-photograph Dust Bowl survivors for a book and exhibition. This exhibit, abridged from the original by Humanities Texas and displayed in Sherman in 1999, combines the FSA photographs and Ganzel’s interviews to create an eloquent story of human fortitude. -- Humanities Texas website
